Cargo insurance

Every day, many cargoes cross the borders of states, regions, cities in order to be delivered on time. During transit, the cargo can be lost, damaged by bad weather or stolen. The amount of losses can be reimbursed if the participants in the transportation process have correctly drawn up and executed the cargo insurance contract.
Types of transportation and risks associated with them
The cargo can be delivered in different ways. And depending on the method, the insurer chooses exactly how to insure it. There are 4 popular delivery methods:
1. Air transportation
This is the youngest way. Its main advantage is speed. For bulky cargo, special cargo planes with a large capacity are used. This method is considered by insurance companies to be one of the safest, contrary to popular belief.
The probability that the cargo will be lost or be hopelessly damaged is negligible in this case. However, the risk of theft still exists – cases of theft are especially frequent at intermediate points.
2. Sea transportation
This type of cargo movement is not nearly as young as air. People have been using melting means for a long time and for different purposes.
Shipping by sea has its drawbacks – the goods can be damaged already in the port during loading or unloading. In addition, the arrival time is very dependent on weather conditions. But there are situations when this method is the only way out. It is used by countries that trade with each other, transporting livestock, grain and other goods.
Water transportation is insured partially or completely, depending on the route and the circumstances of the way. They are convenient with a low risk of theft of the cargo, but it can be damaged by bad weather or salty sea water.
3. Rail transportation
Delivery of goods by rail in our country is extremely popular – they are inexpensive and available in every region.
Railway transportation also has its own small share of risks:
• Risk of damage to property when vehicles derail;
• Risk of damage to the integrity of the package;
• Risk of damage to the cargo by bad weather;
• Risk of theft.
Usually the cargo transported on the rails is wood, grain, rubble or fuel, that is, something that does not need protection. Therefore, rail insurance is not widespread.
4. Road transportation
This type of cargo delivery is the most risky. On the way, an accident may occur, which will lead to theft of cargo or damage to it. Theft of documents is also possible.
Errors made by insurers
In Russia, cargo insurance is voluntary. The services of insurance agents are not the norm and are not taken as seriously as in other countries. Therefore, the future client of the insurance company needs to understand many of the intricacies of this procedure himself. The following are common mistakes that insurers should make sure to avoid:
Wrong data
The insurance company has the right to refuse to pay compensation if it finds inaccuracies in official documents. It is imperative to check the data when writing an application, so as not to incur financial losses.
Concealment of information about the occurrence of an insured event
The insurer has enough time to inform the insurance company about the incident – from days to five. He has the right to make a statement by phone, mail or the Internet.
Providing incomplete information
After the accident, the insurance company requires all information, documents and proof of the occurrence of the insured event. If the client cannot provide everything or provided incomplete information, then insurance agents have every reason to refuse payment.
Incorrectly prescribed risks
In the contract, the policyholder must specify the risks for which he intends to receive monetary compensation in case of losses. If the risks are spelled out incorrectly or are completely absent, then he will receive nothing. For example, during the transportation of cargo by water, it was spoiled by mice, but the contract indicates other possible risks besides this. In this case, the losses will fall on the shoulders of the client, since the situation that happened was not indicated.
